Straughan provided assessment, design, hydrologic and hydraulic analysis, and permitting support to address active erosion along Pike Creek in Newark, Delaware. The project developed a streambank stabilization solution to protect an adjacent private pond from continued lateral migration of the creek.

Our Approach

For this project, Straughan sought to address active erosion along the north bank of Pike Creek in Newark, Delaware, where approximately 100 linear feet of streambank was migrating toward an existing private pond.

Straughan assessed existing stream and bank conditions and developed permit-level plans for streambank stabilization. The team performed desktop and field investigations, coordinated a Delaware-licensed surveyor, and evaluated bank exposure, height, soil composition, wetlands and forested areas, near-bank depths, and stability. Straughan developed grading, layout, cross sections, stabilization details, and planting and erosion and sediment control measures.

We also performed hydrologic and hydraulic analysis using USGS StreamStats to evaluate peak discharges for five design storm events and documented the proposed stabilization methods and supporting calculations in a design memorandum. The team developed environmental compliance plans and resource impact computations and provided permitting support for USACE and DNREC review.
