The Armed Forces Radiobiology Research Institute (AFRRI) Buildings 43 & 47 construction and renovation project is owned by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers, Huntsville and seeks to achieve the federally mandated High Performance and Sustainable Buildings (HPSB) Guiding Principles Validation (GPV) compliance and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification, with a minimum of a LEED Silver level certification, under the LEED v3 2009 Building Design and Construction (BD+C): New Construction rating system requirements.

Our Approach

The AFRRI Buildings 43 & 47 project consisted of the 58,817 square foot research facility. Straughan Environmental worked as the sustainability consultant to support the contractor in tracking and documenting HPSB and LEED requirements towards HPSB Guiding Principles Validation compliance and LEED certification requirements. This project achieved both sets of green building rating system program requirements by tracking sustainability metrics concurrently and compiling shared documentation. HPSB compliance was also met through several LEED credit requirements since both HPSB and LEED shared analogous documentation requirements, where LEED contained more stringent requirements.
