Our Approach

Straughan provides enterprise GIS and asset management support to the Maryland Transportation Authority’s Office of Engineering and Construction (OEC), helping MDTA manage transportation and environmental assets through consistent, reliable, and accessible data. Working across Environmental, Structures, Highways, Operations, and Construction programs, Straughan administers enterprise geodatabases, develops standardized schemas and data-quality procedures, configures ArcGIS web and mobile applications, and establishes workflows that connect asset inventory, inspection, remediation, and reporting. The team works directly with MDTA staff and other consultants to understand business processes, identify data gaps, improve data governance, and translate operational requirements into practical GIS tools.

Straughan’s support has included developing risk-based inspection tools for structures assets; migrating guardrail, barrier, end-treatment, and bridge-parapet inventories into MDTA’s Enterprise GIS; maintaining environmental asset data for stormwater BMPs, drainage systems, natural resources, tanks, and hazardous materials; and integrating asset-condition information from other systems using APIs, Python, FME, and automated ETL workflows. Straughan also develops dashboards, Field Maps and Survey123 applications, data audits, completeness and accuracy reporting, training materials, and user documentation. Together, these efforts provide MDTA with more structured, transparent, and repeatable processes for maintaining asset information and using that information to support inspections, compliance, maintenance, capital planning, and long-term infrastructure stewardship.
