MD 22 at Old Post Road Traffic Noise Analysis and Noise Barrier Design

Straughan performed the Type I traffic noise analysis and the design of a noise barrier as part of a roadway expansion project for capacity improvements in Aberdeen, Maryland.

Our Approach

Maryland State Highway Administration modified the existing intersection of MD 22 (Aberdeen Throughway) and Old Post Road by adding an additional lane in both the eastbound and westbound directions along MD 22, as well as on northbound Old Post Road. The Noise Sensitive Areas (NSAs) for this study encompassed MD 22 and Old Post Road intersection, from US 40 to just west of Halls Cross Roads Elementary School.

Straughan performed a full Type I traffic noise analysis, noise barrier design and report documentation for this project. As part of the noise analysis, Straughan performed simultaneous short-term traffic noise measurements and traffic data collection, TNM model development of existing and build conditions, TNM model validation, traffic noise impact analysis, noise barrier abatement analysis and report development. The barrier horizontal alignment, at approximately 1220 feet long, was set considering post spacing, drainage, right-of-way, utilities, and vehicle stopping sight distance and was designed so that the barrier could be constructed concurrently with road construction. Straughan prepared the contract documents (plans, specs and estimates) in accordance with the SHA Office of Structures guidelines and n also performed Phase V services, such as preparing responses to contractor RFI’s.
