About Diana:

Diana M. Gutierrez, Senior Sustainability Specialist, LEED AP BD+C, ENV SP, GRP, M.S. Civil Engineering
Straughan Environmental, Inc.

Diana is a Sustainability Specialist for Straughan Environmental, Inc. With 21 years of experience in the environmental field, including research and teaching middle and high school science for Baltimore County Public Schools, she brings leadership skills and a strong technical background to her practice.

Diana occasionally speaks regionally about topics in green building and sustainability, including green rating systems. As the landscape of green building standards evolving into codes are raising the bar for the built environment, she has been actively involved in advocacy on the state and local level. Through her work with USGBC MD she has been involved in 2014 advocacy efforts with the state of Maryland’s High Performance Green Building Law, which now includes an International Green Construction Code option. More locally, in 2014 she attended a draft session for Baltimore City’s IgCC adoption, reviewed drafts, garnered support from the civil engineering community to provide input, and provided comments on Baltimore City’s Green Building Law, which now includes the IgCC as an option.

For the past 8 years she has provided green building consulting services for property developers, architects, and contractors in the commercial building sector for public and private clients. Ms. Gutierrez has been the sustainability consultant on more than 50 LEED, Green Globes, Green Communities and Sustainable Site Initiative (SITES) projects. Ms. Gutierrez holds a M.S. in Civil Engineering from Oregon State University. With her technical background and project team experience, Ms. Gutierrez guides Straughan clients through the design and construction project phases utilizing green rating system frameworks and Integrated Project Delivery to guide project sustainability goals, LEED certification, and sustainable site development.

She has received a Maryland Governor’s Citation for excellence in teaching during her tenure. Her passion for teaching has evolved to educate and support schools in their sustainability efforts and in developing Outdoor Classrooms on behalf of USGBC MD and the Schools Committee work.

Diana serves as Vice Chair for U.S. Green Building Council Maryland (USGBC MD) and is committee chair of the chapter’s Schools Committee with a mission to green schools within a generation. She spearheaded the popular Engineering Green Conference in Baltimore, now in its 5th year. Engineering Green is a joint effort between USGBC MD and the American Society of Civil Engineering (ASCE) MD Section to provide civil engineers and others interested in sustainable site design and opportunity to attend and present technical presentations highlighting the best of sustainable site design in the Chesapeake Bay region.
