Straughan is currently seeking a talented and motivated GIS Analyst to join our team. The ideal candidate is a problem-solver that thrives while working in a fast-paced team setting. Strong organizational skills and the ability to communicate effectively in both speech and writing are a must. Primary Responsibilities:

  • Identifies, creates, collects, converts, integrates, and manages geospatial datasets and metadata on multiple simultaneous projects.
  • Analyzes technical problems and devises new approaches and alternative solutions
  • Develops or maintains GIS applications using a combination of GIS software, web-based development tools, and/or Windows development tools
  • Processes and analyzes raster and vector geospatial data in support of clients and staff including engineers, environmental scientists, and planners
  • Creates scripts/models/macros in multiple platforms, especially Python using the ArcPy suite of tools
  • Create and disseminate production workflow documents, including GIS-based technical documentation
  • Technical lead on the development of field data collection applications, which includes identifying and learning new data collection products as they become available
  • Coordination of geospatial data across platforms (desktop, tablet, GPS receivers, etc.)
  • Assists with the preparation of reports, graphics, tables, and map figures to support environmental impact studies, NEPA studies, and technical reports for projects. Conducts peer reviews of these products.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geography, GIS, or related field
  • A minimum of six years’ experience including experience in the preparation of GIS products, all ESRI GIS software products, in addition to open source tools
  • In-depth knowledge of ESRI’s software, including ArcGIS 10.X, ArcGIS Online and/or Portal for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Pro, Collector for ArcGIS, and Survey123 for ArcGIS, especially as it relates to custom surveys using XLSForms
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD and/or MicroStation, especially with CAD-GIS interoperability (ArcGIS for AutoCAD 370 and above)
  • Strong technical writing skills, specifically as they pertain to GIS-based processes
  • Knowledge of cartography, coordinate systems, map projections, and topology
  • Proficiency in basic computer applications, especially MS Office (Word, Excel, and Access)
  • Ability to perform work outside under variable terrain and weather conditions
  • Strong verbal, organizational and written communication skills
  • Ability to work across multiple projects simultaneously and in an organized fashion

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Geography, GIS, or related field
  • Any of the following certifications: GISP, PMP, AICP
  • Experience with GIS-based business development and proposal writing
  • Experience and interest in emerging technologies
  • Drone piloting and sensor data collection and manipulation experience (Section 107 license especially helpful)

The Role as an Office Administrator
As an Office Administrator, you will join the marketing and administrative team. You will provide administrative support in three primary areas: office management, IT, and marketing.

  • Office Management will include maintaining supply inventories; managing off-site document storage; managing maintenance of Straughan’s vehicles; and managing building maintenance activities, repairs, and upgrades. Work may include placing food orders, making travel arrangements, and event registrations.
  • IT Support will include coordinating with staff on computer setups and logistics, maintaining inventories, performing phone setups, and assisting with special projects. We utilize a vendor to provide all technical IT support and management.
  • Marketing Support will include the development and production of materials including proposals, staff resumes, work descriptions, blogs, and presentations; conducting research on the market and industry events.

The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational skills, communication skills, and have a high aptitude for computer software. You should be self-motivated and proactively address emerging needs of the organization. Opportunities for advancement include increased responsibility for company proposals and communications and/or increased responsibility in IT management. Technical writing and marketing expertise, video editing experience, or an interest in IT would benefit your ability to grow in this role. Your efforts will help to ensure that our company runs efficiently and our employees have the tools they need to carry out our mission.

Description

Straughan Environmental, Inc. is a successful, rapidly growing, woman-owned business that provides high-quality and cost effective environmental and cultural resources consulting services to a wide variety of clients in the government and private sectors.

Straughan is currently seeking on call archaeological field technicians, local to the Baltimore/Washington region, to join our Sustainable Design Team for work on primarily local projects.

Responsibilities will include completion of Phase I, II, and III archeological fieldwork, and may also include report documentation tasks.

Desirable candidates will have experience conducting pedestrian and sub-surface surveys in the mid-Atlantic and will be familiar with prehistoric and historic archeological resources commonly found in the Mid-Atlantic.

Field technicians will need to be able to carry field equipment, perform shovel test pits, and maintain accurate records of shovel test pits, excavation units and other survey conditions.

Work performed outside will be performed in variable weather conditions and may entail long days.  This is an entry level position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-5 years of experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archeology or related field.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Completion of an archeological field school within the Mid-Atlantic.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, organizational and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with cultural resource regulations and policy.
  • Experience using Trimble GPS, Total Station, and GIS.
