Environmental Design Intern

Straughan is currently seeking a talented and motivated Environmental Design Intern to join our Environmental Design Team.

The Environmental Design Intern would be working primarily with Professional Engineers and Environmental Analysists on a variety of projects.  They may have the opportunity to work with Sustainable Design group on traffic noise analysis, air quality analysis, roadway planning and design, LEED certification, and sustainability planning.  They may have the opportunity to work with our Water Resources Engineering group on hydraulics and hydrology analysis, stormwater management design, drainage design, erosion and sediment control design, and stream restoration. They may have the opportunity to work with our Planning group or with Environmental Scientists in our Natural Resources division as well. Internship could possibly extend through fall semester of 2019.

Qualifications:
Required

  • Must be available for full work days.
  • A registered student at a university majoring in either Civil Engineering or Environmental Engineering
  • Completed all sophomore level engineering coursework
  • CAD experience, preferably MicroStation
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel

Straughan is currently seeking an experienced Climate Change Scientist to join our team. The successful candidate for this position will work on a U.S. government contract supporting global climate change research.

Position Title: Senior or Mid-Level Staff Scientist

Office: National Climate Assessment, U.S. Global Change Research Program

Location: Washington, DC

Basic Function of Job:

The incumbent will lead technical and administrative tasks for the National Climate Assessment (NCA) at the USGCRP National Coordination Office (NCO). More specifically, the incumbent will provide senior- or mid-level program support – depending upon qualifications – to the NCA and USGCRP under broad guidance from the NCA Chief of Staff and USGCRP Leadership. Responsibilities include leading teams to develop and complete technical, planning, and communication tasks.

Duties:

National Climate Assessment Technical Tasks

  • Coordinate framing, writing, and review of reports, tools, and derivative products.
  • Identify ways to enhance usefulness of NCA products for a range of users.
  • Lead teams from development to launch of high-profile technical, scientific, data, and communication products and tools.
  • Develop, research, review, and revise NCA products to ensure their consistency, quality and relevance. Contribute content and editing throughout the process from prospectus development through launch.

National Climate Assessment Planning Tasks

  • Develop guidance for NCA processes and products. Work with and/or lead teams to execute plans for completion of complex, multi-stage processes.
  • Provide leadership in defining, planning, and implementing NCA activities and their coordination with various interagency efforts.
  • Lead teams to identify, develop, and implement strategies to assess and improve program effectiveness and collaborative efforts
  • Conduct qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the program and recommend and implement action plans to improve performance.

Communication and Engagement

  • In coordination with the USGCRP Engagement and Outreach Lead, develop and implement strategies for engaging diverse stakeholders.
  • Represent NCA to outside organizations to improve involvement of stakeholders in government, universities, NGOs, and private sector. Organize and speak at events, and recruit experts and interns to contribute to program activities.
  • Lead teams to plan, conduct, and report on large and complex meetings.
  • Develop slides, posters, talking points, fact sheets, social media content, and other communication materials.

USGCRP Tasks

  • Serve as expert resource on climate change, environmental science, and social sciences.
  • Provide recommendations to leadership to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership role in facilitating interagency workgroups.
  • Seek opportunities to learn innovative methods and build capacity within the program to use those methods.

Education: Advanced degree in related field (e.g., climate, earth, or environmental, or social science, engineering, etc.)

Experience and skills:

  • Advanced knowledge of climate change science, related natural and social sciences, policy, and science communication.
  • Expert knowledge of assessment processes and peer review processes. First-hand knowledge of authoring and publishing scientific documents; record of relevant scientific publication.
  • Familiarity with Federal research, policy, and operational programs on climate change. Experience with coordination of interagency activities and working groups or similar groups.
  • Skill in leading teams and working independently to prepare technical, administrative, and scientific reports, and to develop, negotiate, and implement solutions to problems.
  • Skill in proactively assessing programmatic needs and recommending and implementing action to meet those needs.
  • Skill in building relationships to understand and meet constituent needs. Skill in making program processes and results more useful to constituents.
  • Minimum two years’ experience involving project management. Demonstrated organizational skills. Ability to prioritize and carry out multiple tasks under tight deadlines. Ability to develop guidance for completing large, complex tasks, and to coordinate others in executing guidance.
  • Advanced oral and written communication skills. Excellent interpersonal skills.

Straughan Environmental, Inc. is seeking a suitable candidate to fill the role of Environmental Compliance Specialist at a major federal facility.  This position will report to a senior project manager and will be responsible for providing project support and leading oversight of the Environmental Management System (EMS) as described below:

Project support responsibilities:

  • Manage and coordinate reviews of new and updated existing programs and projects during the life cycle of the project (i.e., design, construction, operation, and closure), including cross-disciplinary coordination with environmental staff and external stakeholders.

EMS lead responsibilities:

  • Prepare presentations and materials, coordinate, set up, and lead meetings with senior staff and other environmental stakeholders onsite.
  • Monitor, track, review, and rank activities with environmental impacts and aspects.  Develop, monitor and track progress towards goals associated with high priority aspects and environmental management programs.
  • Provide oversight for operational controls concerning activities within the scope of the environmental program.
  • Conduct ISO 14001:2015 equivalent environmental internal audits and assist with external audits.
  • Prepare and lead trainings in the Environmental Management System.

This position will also provide backup support to the site asbestos management program.

Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience and knowledge with EMS programs, as well as evaluating complex projects to identify environmental impacts and concerns; developing engineering solutions to mitigate such impacts, and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with clients, peers, and other contractor organizations. Must have excellent organization and written communication skills.  Experience and certifications in asbestos management are a plus.  Must have minimum of 5 years of relevant work experience.  Must be competent in the use of all elements of Microsoft Office Professional.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated experience in evaluating complex projects to identify environmental impacts and concerns; developing engineering solutions to mitigate such impacts, and the ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with clients, peers, and other contractor organizations. Must have excellent organization and written communication skills.  Experience in project/program management is a plus.  Must have minimum of 5 years of relevant experience. Must have demonstrated a working knowledge of Federal and Texas environmental regulations.  Must be competent in the use of all elements of Microsoft Office Professional.

Archeological Field Technician

Straughan is currently seeking on call archaeological field technicians, local to the Baltimore/Washington region, to join our Sustainable Design Team for work on primarily local projects.

Responsibilities will include completion of Phase I, II, and III archeological fieldwork, and may also include report documentation tasks.

Desirable candidates will have experience conducting pedestrian and sub-surface surveys in the mid-Atlantic and will be familiar with prehistoric and historic archeological resources commonly found in the Mid-Atlantic.

Field technicians will need to be able to carry field equipment, perform shovel test pits, and maintain accurate records of shovel test pits, excavation units and other survey conditions.

Work performed outside will be performed in variable weather conditions and may entail long days.  This is an entry level position.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • 1-5 years of experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Anthropology, Archeology or related field.

Desirable Qualifications:

  • Completion of an archeological field school within the Mid-Atlantic.
