The Job Opportunity
We are seeking to add a qualified Senior Staff Accountant to our  team. In this role, the Sr. Staff Accountant plays a larger part in the overall success of the department’s goals an has the ability to contribute to a variety of various responsibilities.  An exceptional candidate will demonstrate familiarity with full-cycle accounting and monthly closing procedures, preparation of financial statements, A/R & A/P management, preparation of client invoices, payroll functions, and audit support. The Staff Accountant supports the Senior Staff Accountant and/or the Accounting Manager by assisting with financial reporting, maintaining fixed assets, reviewing and processing accounts payable, accounts receivable collections, review and entry of payroll, external industry reporting, and miscellaneous internal reporting. Compensation for this position ranges from $50K to 65K, depending on experience, education, and skills.

Straughan Environmental is seeking an Onsite Landscape Construction and Maintenance Inspector to join our Natural Resources Business Unit. The successful candidate must have 3 years of experience in horticulture, pesticide application, vegetation management, turf management and supervision of construction and landscape installations, and would perform the following duties:

  • Inspect and provide technical advice on landscape installation and maintenance projects to ensure the work is performed in accordance with contract documents;
  • Inspect plant material for landscape projects to verify the proper type and size and to verify plants are disease free prior to and during installation;
  • Coordinate field activities with contractors and various public and private agencies;
  • Prepare reports for various environmental issues;
  • Apply plant and landscape knowledge to approve plant material and layout locations prior to planting and provide guidance regarding general landscaping practices; and,
  • Administer landscape and environmental projects through conducting field inspections, providing guidance, and managing all contract records and documentation.

The selected candidate will support the Maryland Department of Transportation/State Highway Administration (MDOT/SHA) Landscape Program Division’s Western Region Team, including performing inspections in MDOT/SHA District 6 (including Washington, Allegheny, and Garrett Counties) and SHA District 7 (including Carroll, Frederick, and Howard Counties).  MDOT/SHA field locations.

Required Skills/Requirements

  • Knowledge of plant biology, plant identification, landscape design and common insect and diseases of trees and ornamental plants.
  • Ability to interpret landscape design plans and documentation as it relates to installation and maintenance.
  • Knowledge of MDOT/SHA landscape installation and maintenance contract specifications, schedules, and special requirements.
  • Skill in the performance of code enforcement function including erosion and sediment control inspection, pesticide application, and review of landscape and construction plans and on-site inspections.
  • Skill in report writing and communicating with MDOT/SHA representatives, other consultants, and contractors.
  • Skill in the clear and concise communication (both oral and written) of technical information related to development standards.
  • Competency in Microsoft Word and Excel, Adobe Acrobat, and Internet browsers.

•    In-depth knowledge of ESRI’s software, including ArcGIS 10.X, ArcGIS Online, and Collector for ArcGIS.
•    Experience reading legal descriptions and survey plats that are part of legal documents to develop shapefiles for easement programs
•    Knowledge of cartography, coordinate systems, map projections, and topology

Straughan is currently seeking a full-time construction inspector for a streetscape project in the District of Columbia. The ideal candidate should have an interest in and understanding of construction processes and environmental issues and practices.

Requirements

  • 5-10 years of construction inspection experience in the transportation sector
  • High School Diploma
  • Knowledge of environmental regulations
  • Experience overseeing temporary traffic control work zones
  • Experience maintaining inspection records including quantities of materials, quality of work, materials, equipment, and labor
  • Ability to interpret design intent on civil engineering plans and specifications
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with clients and co-workers
  • ACI Certified Field Testing Technician – Level I
  • Valid Driver’s License

Requirements

  • 4-10 years experience
  • Stream restoration design including sediment transport, and modeling experience
  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Civil/Environmental Engineering, Geomorphology, Environmental science, or related field
  • Erosion and sediment control design
  • Geomorphic assessment experience
  • Environmental permitting experience
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to effectively communicate with clients and co-workers

  • PE registered in Mid-Atlantic region and have ability for Maryland registration by reciprocity
  • Rosgen Certified or similar training
