Straughan is currently seeking an Acoustical Engineer/Analyst to join our Sustainable Design Team.

The acoustical work that we do is mostly in the transportation industry. While it is primarily highway noise, we do rail noise and airport noise as well.  Below are some typical tasks.

Field data collection: Perform sound measurements and traffic data collection.

Field data analysis: Compute Leq’s and process the traffic data using spreadsheets, most of which are based on client standard spreadsheet templates.

Noise modeling: Use the FHWA Traffic Noise Model (TNM) for highway noise and spreadsheets for rail noise.

For highway noise, 3D noise models with terrain and infrastructure such as roads and buildings are laid out using CAD software such as Microstation or GIS, data points are stored and transferred into TNM. TNM is a free software program developed by FHWA and can be downloaded on their website here. https://www.fhwa.dot.gov/environment/noise/traffic_noise_model/

Typically, modeling is done for existing conditions and for predicting noise levels in the future due to the construction of roadway or rail improvements.

Noise analysis: Noise impact analysis and noise mitigation analysis using FHWA, FRA and/or state guidance documents. For example, here is the Maryland State Highway, Highway Noise Policy.

https://www.roads.maryland.gov/OHD2/SHA_Noise_Policy.pdf

Documentation: Preparing reports documenting the methodology of the analysis and the results.  Report figures are prepared using CAD or GIS. Report text typically uses client Word document templates.

This position requires the applicant to work On-Site at the Maryland State Highway Administration in the Traffic Noise Group in Baltimore City, Maryland for an average of 3 days/week.  The balance of their time would be performing work out of our Columbia, Maryland office.

There will be a training period where the applicant would work full time in the Columbia, Maryland office before work On-Site would begin. This training period is estimated to be between 3 and 6 months.

 Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Civil, Environmental, or Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Science or related field
  • CAD experience, preferably Microstation
  • Ability and eagerness to perform field work such as traffic noise measurements, traffic noise data collection, and additional environmental field tasks. Fieldwork may involve walking through wooded areas, working alongside of roadways and carrying field equipment.
